Insulation Coatings on Refrigeration Units

In construction of a refrigeration box or storage unit, a double wall construction is normally used to hold the foam or fiberglass insulation material. This material can be as thick as 150mm which causes the second wall to be costly with the added metal construction. There are several problems with this construction. The unit is metal in most construction and any insulation material used for the filler between the walls cannot insulate the all the metal surface. 

The wall seams, supports and attachments are not insulated which allows heat to load into these areas and migrate to the interior through the metal going around the insulation materials that are only in the cavity. As reported by ASHRAE (Air condition/ Heating industry Code Group), a R 19-21 (R 3.5 metric) rated insulation material is only an effective R 7 (R 1.2 metric) when used in a metal constructed wall or unit.

To use the products distributed by NEOtech Coatings will reduce cost and be more efficient at the same time. 

  1. The exterior side of the interior wall can be sprayed with Hot Pipe Coating at 25mm. Allow to dry , then overcoat with Super Therm® at the normal thickness of 250 microns at 2.4m2 per litre to seal the HPC. Be sure to spray the Super Therm® over all the supports and braces to block heat load and migration.
  2. Install a otter skin that is only 25mm around the coating.
  3. Spray Super Therm® over this exterior of the otter skin. Totally coat the exterior of the unit to eliminate any heat load into the box on the exterior skin.
  4. A coat of the Enamo Grip® in white can be applied over this to offer a semi-gloss finish and be tough and easy to clean.

This system requires only a 25mm thickness of HPC to insulate the unit. The Super Therm® sprayed over the exterior of the unit prevents any of the metal structure from absorbing heat which would normally transfer to the interior through the braces and sectional dividers built into the unit.

Whether this is a consumer product or a commercial / industrial unit, the same process is used to build the cabinet for the unit that can block and stop heat load into the metal which normally migrates to the interior. If metal cannot absorb heat, then there is no heat transfer to the cold climate in the interior of the unit.
